What Is Chocolate Tea? Meet the Most Surprising Way to Sip Cacao
Most people have never heard of chocolate tea—and that’s exactly why we love it.
Chocolate tea is brewed from the outer shells of roasted cocoa beans, a byproduct of our bean-to-bar chocolate-making process. These shells are packed with deep, earthy chocolate flavor and naturally caffeine-free—making them perfect for steeping.
At Harvest Chocolate, we save every shell during production to make this rich, grounding tea. We call it our “no bean left behind” mission. Instead of tossing out the shells, we turn them into a cozy, cocoa-scented tea that’s as sustainable as it is sippable.
Why Drink Chocolate Tea?
Chocolate tea is light but full of flavor. It’s smooth like hot cocoa, but not thick or sugary. You’ll taste warm notes of chocolate, malt, and toast—especially when steeped long or paired with milk and honey.
Because we roast all our cocoa beans in-house, the flavor comes from thoughtful sourcing and careful roasting. It’s not “flavored” tea—it’s the real deal. Just cacao. Just good.
And when you enjoy chocolate tea, you’re helping reduce food waste while supporting the full value of thoughtfully grown cacao.
How to Brew Chocolate Tea
☕ Hot Tea (Loose Leaf or Tea Bags)
Whether you’re brewing from a tin or a tea bag, the steps are simple:
For tea bags:
- Add 1 tea bag to your mug
- Pour over 8–10 oz of boiling water
- Steep for 2–4 minutes, steep more for a stronger brew
- Enjoy straight, or with milk and honey
For loose leaf:
- Add 1–2 tablespoons to a tea infuser or French press
- Pour over boiling water
- Steep for 2–4 minutes
- Strain and sip
🍹 How to Brew Iced Chocolate Tea
This is how we do it at the shop during summer—and trust us, it’s a game-changer.
What you’ll need:
- 1 cup of loose-leaf chocolate tea
- 64 oz of water (or whatever size your coffee maker holds)
- A drip coffee maker (or French press/cold brew pitcher)
- A BIG spoonful of honey, maple or sugar (optional, but recommended)
Instructions:
- Add chocolate tea to your drip coffee basket
- Put the BIG spoonful of sweetener in the carafe
- Brew as you would a full pot of coffee (just with tea instead!)
- Chill in the fridge until ice cold
- Pour over ice with a few slices of in-season fruit—think strawberries, peaches, or orange slices
You can also cold-steep: just toss loose tea in water, refrigerate for 24-48 hours, then strain in the morning.
